Questions & Answers On Work From Your Home Ideas

Jim asks…

I’m looking for a “work from home” job any ideas?

Hello,

I’m in the process of making some major changes in my life, and my financial status needs some help. I’m looking for a little job, which I can do from home, or how to start my own little business.

Any ideas? I have searched online, I’m just note sure how legitimate these sites can be.

Thank you for your advice.

Mandy asks…

How do you discourage a local friend from inviting himself over to your home or just dropping by?

I think this person is great, and I value his friendship. However, I am very busy and I work out of home. This friend has a habit of calling and making “spontaneous” requests to stop in for a glass of wine. I always thought it was rather rude to invite yourself to another person’s home? Any ideas on how I can delicately navigate this awkward situation without alienating my acquaintance ?

admin answers:

Tell him sweetly that you have a pile of invoices to type (or whatever you do) and ask if you can call him later to set up a good day to meet for lunch.

Child care is a huge demand these days. It would be a great

choice for you, if you were up to looking after other people’s

kids for a few hours every week. It brings in extra money and you

can stay home wit.h your child. You don’t sell anything either.

And parents would jump all over the teacher fact too.

I would suggest, however, that if you were to jump that route, to

take a Preparation to Home Child Care course, usually offered at

a local child development centre or child drop-in centre, and to

also have a written contract to protect yourself, the parents,

and the children in your care. As a liability, add liability to

your home insurance. That way if a child were to be injured, and

the parents sue, you don’t pay a ton of money.

Ken asks…

What do you do to work from home?

I have three children (ages just 5, 2 1/2 years, and 4 months). I would love to babysit in my house, but nobody seems to want to have a sitter outside of their homes. What do you to make some extra money from home? Thanks for your ideas?

admin answers:

I work FT from home as a technical writer. I’ve known others who have their own online business or sell stuff on eBay. You can also do web design, or work for the search engine, chacha.com. Some publishers will pay you $3-$5 per page to edit a manuscript.

Check out the work-at-home-mom’s website, http://www.wahm.com for ideas and leads.

Good luck!

Edit: Angel, you can do a search for “freelance manuscript editing” and get a bunch of online companies that frequently hire freelance editors. Check out this site for starters: http://www.councilscienceeditors.org/jobbank/position_available.cfm

Bob asks…

Does anyone have legitimate ideas for my wife to work from home?

She does not want to sell anything. We have 2 young kids, so customer service postions really aren’t feasible because there would be noise in the background. We don’t want to pay any money because those are usually scams. Thank you for your help!

Here are my suggestions on finding a legitimate opportunity that’s right for YOU:

- Set your financial goals — Are you just looking for extra income or a potential full-time income? How long (and hard) are you willing to work to meet your goal?

- Determine if you are looking for a JOB or a BUSINESS — there is a distinct difference between the two and you want to focus your energies appropriately for the best results.

- If looking for a JOB, what are your marketable skills and previous experiences? If you are looking for a BUSINESS, go with your passions, things that interest and motivate you the most. Build a list and use that to begin your search. General rule of thumb: Never pay for a job (businesses, on the other hand, usually involve some expenses).

- Review your budget — know ahead of time what you are willing and able to invest into your business, including start-up costs and ongoing maintenance and promotion.

- Find a rep to contact, check out their websites, ask questions, do your own independent research.

- I personally also check out a company’s status and consumer feedback on www.bbb.org and www.ripoffreport.com

Hope this info helps, best wishes on your search…

Questions & Answers On Work From Home Reviews

Don asks…

Can I claim my internet and/or electricity as tax expenses as a freelance writer?

I work from home reviewing computer-based video games for a living, and the articles are published online. I spend maybe 6 hours a day working on articles, so it goes without saying that without internet (or electricity) I could not do my job. Can I claim these things as expenses? And would I have to file form 8829 if I did, or could I just add them to my Schedule C?

admin answers:

Of course they are how you make your living. Without them you could not earn an income.

Charlie asks…

My boss just offered to let me work from home one day a week. Should this impact my asking for a raise?

I manage a small business and am the only employee. My boss has been kind enough to recently tell me that if I’d like to work from home on Friday’s I was welcome to do so. I jumped at the chance, and am very excited about it. With the type of business I’m in, I may only have
5 or so phone calls on my work from home day! So, to me I just was given an extra day off! But, I am due for a review and a raise in a few months. Last year, I was given a $1 per hour raise towards my $16 hr salary. Should I still ask for my annual raise? I really appreciate his offer, but I still need the extra money as finances are tight at home.

admin answers:

Absolutely not. This truly is not an “extra” day off as you are still expected to be available for work, just in a more relaxed atmosphere. It also shows that your boss trusts you and knows that you are reliable. I own my own business and know that if I didn’t trust an employee I would never offer up such a “flexible” work schedule with an employee I could not totally trust and I did not think did not truly deserve it. This is a “bonus” of sorts. But it shouldn’t stop you from getting a raise.
I would not be afraid when your review comes up to request another raise if you have continued to improve on your performance or at least kept your standards up.
Peace & Love :)

John asks…

Genuine ways to work from home and earn money working from home?

Does anyone know of any genuine reputable companies that employ home workers to do data input, telephone work (of a moral nature) market research, packing, anything that will result in a salary that allows me to earn enough to survive? any other ideas for home working also welcome. I had asked a similar question recently, but it was removed before i had a chance to review all the answers.
Many thanks. And a very happy new year to you all.
I forgot to mention i’m in the UK, perhaps there is a way to ensure only users in the Uk get to see this question, but i’m not sure how to do it, there’s a seperate question to ask…

Rachel asks…

How much free time do engineers and engineer technicians have away from work?

I am thinking about being an engineer or engineering technician for either mechanical or electronics, but I am afraid I won’t have much free time away from work. When I get out of the office (or site/plant) at the end of my shift, I want to do other things besides work. I don’t want to be at home reviewing charts or doing research for a project at work. I want to do other things like spending time with family/friends and exercising and playing sports. I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks very much.

admin answers:

As a technician you have little to fear – techs generally have nothing to take home. There is a possibility of travel, night shifts, overtime, and the like, but you will generally get compensated for those and can usually leave those jobs to the ones who want them.

As an engineer it depends a lot on your specific role and temperament. I know guys who live their job, and others who clock out and check out at the end of the day. For most of us it is a 9-5 kind of job, with occasional bursts of overtime or take-home work. But realize that just about everything in engineering these days happens on a computer, and most companies are unwilling to pay for high-end laptops. As such, expect any unusual hours to occur AT work – when you are home you are done, have a beer.

Please note that as you advance as an engineer, especially into managerial roles, your hours, travel, and “take-home” work increase. If you stay the strict technical path things usually stay the same.

Mandy asks…

Does anyone work from home or telecommute?

I am looking for honest answers if you work from home, own your own business , or work for a company please let me know. I am interested in all aspects of it , and i would also like to know how to get started , what companies offer it , and just the basics. Please anyone with real answers thats actually doing it right now please respond. I will pick best answer.

admin answers:

You are probably receiving a lot of information about possible work from home jobs. I have been in your shoes and have spent many hours online researching and trying to find the right one. The one thing that I ended up figuring out is that there are no true work from home “jobs.” In a work from home job you usually start out working for a company and then for whatever reason, sometimes, the company will let you take your job home; thus work from home job. I would never pay a company to work from home.

However, there are many work from home “opportunities.” These opportunities provide you with the vehicle to work from home and build your own business. The difficult or frustrating part about finding the right opportunity is that there are many offers that are not legitimate, but scams. Theses scams make it difficult for the companies that truly offer a legitimate opportunity to work from home. Usually, work from home opportunities have a small investment to start your own business. These are okay as long as they are around $100, anything much more than that and I would stay away. Also if they require a monthly overhead to run the business it should include things like your websites, training, back office system, and support. Remember any business that you start and want to continue will always have start up costs and monthly expenses, if it doesn’t then it is probably not a legit business.

I am a stay at home mother of 2 (ages 4 and 2). My husband works 6 days a week and I do not have much help in the area of child care for my children. On my journey to finding the right work from home opportunity I tried everything from selling vitamins, lotions and many other product based companies. I also looked into processing information online. What I realized with all these companies is that I usually put more money back into my business and ended up with lots of product I really did not need. I also was very skeptical of some of those online work from home websites that really never got to the point of what I would be doing to earn income.

Finally, I was given information on a legitimate work from home company. At first I was very skeptical and paid no attention to the information. Then one day my mother needed to have some dental work done but had no insurance. I remembered that I had some information on discount dental plans. Once I researched the information I had been given, I realized that I could provide my mother with a way to pay less for her procedure and earn an income for signing her onto the discount dental plan. I have been with the company since and am on the fast track toward building a residual income.

I work 15 hours a week (give or take a few) for a National Discount Medical Benefits Company. The company has been in business for over 16 years and is continuing to expand! We have been featured on “60 minutes”, “The New York Times”, “Wall Street Journal”, “Time Magazine”, and “American Medical Review” as one of the most reputable, legitimate home based companies. We are members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Dental Plans and the owner of the company sits on the board of The Consumer Health Alliance, which we are also a part of their membership.

Our company addresses the number one problem in US, which is that 70% of Americans can’t afford or can’t get health insurance for whatever reason. We are an alternative for people who are suffering with their health because of this issue. Now to work for our company you don’t have to know everything there is to know about Health Care. Our company will train you on how to communicate our services to those who need it. We have over 2 million members that use our plans and save money on their health care.

When you work for the company you are able to set your own hours and build a residual income while you work. Because we get paid month after month, year after year for the work we do our income is always increasing and we get paid even when we don’t work. The company also does not enforce a monthly quota, which was important to me. I wanted to have the flexibility to work when I wanted and how much I wanted. Of course the more you put into your business the more income you will receive.

Some of the benefits we offer are 401k, direct deposit, life insurance and a family benefit package for your entire household. The next best thing is there is no cold calling, telemarketing, stocking of inventory, collecting of payments, and no home parties! This was very important to me as I had the child care issue to deal with and wanted to be able to stay home and work without having to leave my house.

Another great thing about our company is that we all work together to as a team. We are not out to compete with our fellow representatives. Whenever I need advice my team is there to help me to be a success. This was also very important as I was new to the business and wanted the team support you get working a 9-5 job without having to work the 9-5 job. I have also made many friends along the way and still have the interaction with adults while taking care of my children at home.

I guess I could go on and on about what we do and how we get paid, but the best thing for you to do is research the company for yourself and determine if it is right for you.
