Questions & Answers On Work From Home Reviews Of Work From Home Jobs

John asks…

I just got an email from careerbuilder.com – is it legit?

It says it’s that a company called Hill International has reviewed my information from careerbuilder.com and is offering me a job. It is a work at home job, and one of the requirements is the employee must have a good credit score. It goes on to say that if I am interested, I have to reply to the email. It also says that to speed up the hiring process I can go to their website, www.TheBizz1.cc, and apply for the job there. The only thing is, on their application it asks for my Social Security number (as most employment applications do). I don’t want to go around giving that information unless this is a legitimate offer. Have any of you heard of this company or worked for them, and if so, is it any good?
BTW: the website says the position is a work-at-home position. They have you physically go out and place orders for clients who are having trouble getting certain products. It says you will place the orders with your own credit card(s) (AFTER they’ve given you the money), and you keep like 5% of the order total. The company guarantees you will make $2000/month.
This is the address it came from:

noreply_position4380@careerbuilder.com

The thing is, I don’t remember if I’ve ever signed up with them, but it’s very possible I could have, since I was looking for a work-at-home job at one time.

admin answers:

Requiring a credit score in which you are giving a total stranger your social security number is very suspicious and overall, Hill International sounds like a total scam. Nevertheless, do a search on Google.com for “Hill International scam” and see what comes up.

Good luck!

Mandy asks…

What if a job I’m applying for wants to talk to my current employer?

I’ve been employed for close to five years at my current job. It’s at a very small business. My employer has known I’ve been pregnant for several months. When I recently spoke to them about maternity leave and my return to work schedule, I tried to discuss with them a work from home schedule (1-2 days a week) for after my maternity leave, I received “we’ll really have to think about this” as an answer. Note too that my job is pretty much answering emails – something I could very easily do in any setting.

Having this up in the air has really got me concerned. Based on past experience, I have a strong feeling that I’m not going to get an answer either way for quite some time, and I need to start planning now.

So, with this major dissapointment from my employer (and my generally unhappy opinion of my current job) I’ve decided to start looking for a new one. I went to the employment website for a large local employer and went to fill out their online application. This application requires me to fill out the name of my current supervisor and his/her contact information and notes that they have the right to contact them during the application review process. Since I’m still employed at my current job – and may very well keep it if I’m allowed to work from home – I don’t feel comfortable sharing this information. I don’t want to tell my current employer I’m looking for a job elsewhere, and at the same time, I don’t want to avoid applying for any jobs at this new potential employer. What do you think I should do?

admin answers:

I can understand where you’re coming from. I am currently in a job where i’ve realized the company is not in-sync with my long-term career goals, so i’ve taken it upon myself to look for a new job.

I’ve filled out a number of applications.. All of which require me to list my current employer, supervisor and their contact info. Your application is the first impression an employer gets of you- the last thing you want to do is provide inaccurate information, or lie. What I have done (for all my applications) is listed my employer info as accurately as I could. Then, in the job description, or in the “reason for leaving” section I wrote, “EMPLOYER MAY BE CONTACTED UPON OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT,” or “EMPLOYER MAY BE CONTACTED UPON ACCEPTANCE OF EMPLOYMENT OFFER.”

Most employers know that applicants may be job searching without their current employers knowledge. And, I would like to think that they wouldn’t go out of the way to reach out to your current employer unless they interviewed and met with you first and saw you as a potential candidate..

admin answers:

100% scam.

There is no job.

There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money.

The next email will be from another of the scammer’s fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the “secretary/assistant/accountant” and will demand you cash a large fake check sent on a stolen UPS/FedEx billing account number and send 90-95% of the money via Western Union or moneygram back to the scammer posing as the “supply company” while you “keep” 5%-10%. When your bank realizes the check is fake and it bounces, you get the real life job of paying back the bank for the bounced check fees and all the bank’s money you sent to an overseas criminal.

Or the next email will be from another of the scammer’s fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the “assistant” and will demand you accept packages purchased with stolen credit cards at YOUR home address. Then you are suppose to use a stolen UPS/FedEx billing account number to send the electronics, clothing and jewelry overseas. When the websites, credit card owners and UPS/FedEx discover the fraud, you get the real life job of paying back all of them. Then the local law enforcement comes knocking asking why are you fencing stolen merchandise for someone you never met, don’t know their real life name and have no idea even what country they really live in.

Western Union and moneygram do not verify anything on the form the sender fills out, not the name, not the street address, not the country, not even the gender of the receiver, it all means absolutely nothing. The clerk will not bother to check ID and will simply hand off your cash to whomever walks in the door with the MTCN# and question/answer. Neither company will tell the sender who picked up the cash, at what store location or even in what country your money walked out the door. Neither company has any kind of refund policy, money sent is money gone forever.

Now that you have responded to a scammer, you are on his ‘potential sucker’ list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don’t bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn’t worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

6 “Rules to follow” to avoid most fake jobs:
1) Job asks you to use your personal bank account and/or open a new one.
2) Job asks you to print/mail/cash a check or money order.
3) Job asks you to use Western Union or moneygram in any capacity.
4) Job asks you to accept packages and re-ship them on to anyone.
5) Job asks you to pay visas, travel fees via Western Union or moneygram.
6) Job asks you to sign up for a credit reporting or identity verification site.

Avoiding all jobs that mention any of the above listed ‘red flags’ and you will miss nearly all fake jobs. Only scammers ask you to do any of the above. No. Exceptions. Ever. For any reason.

If you google “fake UK job”, “fraud personal assistant Western Union scam” or something similar you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near-victims of this type of scam.

Did you apply for this job?
Did you post a resume on Career Builder? (I hope not)
did you actually look at their web-site?
What in the e-mail you received relates to this company?

It is not uncommon for scammers/spammers to include legitimate links to websites and to “steal” the names of businesses for their illegal activity.

Unsolicited e-mails are SCAMS

Davina asks…

Do I have the right to a review/raise at work?

Here’s the situation – I have worked with the company I am working for as an in-house accountant since December of 2005. I quite my job in August of 2009 to move 100 miles away & help with our family business, but I was asked by my old boss to consider coming back to work for him in April of 2010. The girl they hired in my position wasn’t doing a good job so they asked me to work for them again. It was do-able for me to work for the old boss again because I am able to dial into their server and work from my home office just the same as I was working for him before (which is necessary since I”m now 100 miles away from the office). I do have the advantage of flexable hours now because I work from home & the boss trusts me that I do a good job & will do quality work for him… which I do. But everyone else at the company received a review last month & a raise – except for me! Even though I work from home I should still have the right to a review, right? Any suggestions on how I ask for a review? I would also expect a raise since I feel I do a good job & we recently opened up a new branch office that has put extra work on me lately! I don’t think this is fair; but I’m so shy asking for reviews/raises! By the way, I think I’m underpaid to begin with; I took a cut in pay when I came back to work for them! As a sole in-house accountant for a company with 5 locations I am only getting paid $31,200 a year right now! And yes, I am the only accountant for all 5 branches. I feel like I’m only getting paid 1/2 of what I’m worth – which is why the new girl they hired in my place before didn’t work out – they don’t pay enough money to get a quality accountant & I’m too nice to say no or put up a stink about my wages!

admin answers:

You do not.

Bob asks…

Should I accept job offer?

I currently work for a health insurance company in Philadelphia, PA (we’ll label that Job A). I recently got a job offer at MTV in NY (we’ll label that Job B). I’m wondering if it’s worth accepting given the pros and cons list provided below.

***** Job A *****
+ working there for 1.5 years
+ co-workers are great
+ current management is relaxed and very flexible
+ on-site gym is a nice perk
+ benefits aren’t bad. typical medical, dental, vision, 10 paid holidays (depending on year)
+ 7.5 hr per day (37.5 hr per week) instead of the typical 8 hr per day (40 hr per week). my typical day is from 9 AM – 5 PM, with a 30 min lunch break.
+ 135 total hrs to be used for either personal, vacation and sick days, which breaks down to 18 days. we’re also allowed to carry over up to 37.5 hrs (5 days) of unused time.
+ we are allowed to “buy” an extra 5 days of vacation, which is essentially unpaid time off. we can “return” any unused days back to the company and get our money back.
~ taking Septa bus is cheap, but takes anywhere from 30 – 50 minute commute one way due to traffic and various bus stops
~ although the work isn’t too boring due to various projects, i would like to work in a different industry.
- company is unstable due to economy, healthcare reform and a pretty huge business venture that failed. as a result, there has been constant internal reorganization, layoffs, employees leaving for other jobs and employees taking early retirement packages. There is supposedly another round of layoffs this coming June.
- as a result of above, company’s profit margins are very slim. there were no salary increases and only a 1% bonus given regardless of positive or negative performance review.
- as a result of stability concerns, work environment isn’t the greatest and employee morale is low
- tuition reimbursement went from unlimited annually to $3000 annually. :(

***** Job B *****
+ MTV! lol. for me, it’s an industry change from healthcare to media, which i think i would enjoy.
+ no official dress code; most employees wear jeans, sneakers and t-shirts to work everyday unless you have a meeting w/ clients, upper management, etc
+ typical medical, dental and vision packages, 10 paid holidays
+ every other Friday off in summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day
+ 10 vacation days, 4 personal days and 10 sick days = 24 days off per year. allowed to carryover half of any unused time as long as it does not exceed 10 days.
+ annual 5% bonus target (depending on own performance and company performance). same applies for salary increases
+ the team and the bosses (i met with directors, VP and SVP) seemed very relaxed and easy-going.
+ compared to Job A, tuition reimbursement is $10,000 annually
~ salary isn’t exactly what i was looking for, especially for a position in NY and is only a couple thousand more than what i currently make.
~ compared to my current job, core hours are from 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM (8 hour work, 1 hour lunch), but can leave early if work is completed and/or if lunch isn’t taken away from desk
- TRAVEL!! if i commute from Philly, i’m looking at a 2.5 hours one way (1/2 hour to get to bus station, 1.5 – 2 hours for bus ride to NY). so i’m looking at 5 hours spent each day on commuting. i am looking into possibly renting a studio to stay a couple nights of the week. so a typical day would be me leaving home by 6:30, catch a bus or train around 7 – 7:30 AM, get to NY by 9 – 9:30. then assuming i leave offices at 6:30, catch bus/train at 7 PM, back in philly by 9 PM and home around 9:30 PM. repeat for remaining days of the week.
- i have a 1 year old daughter and traveling or staying in a studio in NY will result in loss of family time. to comprimise, i could stay in NY mon-thurs. the only time i would travel is monday morning, thursday night back to Philly and Friday back to and from work.
- the difference in salary and then some will go right back into traveling and/or rent in NY.
- no relocation reimbursement

both jobs are pretty similar, the biggest difference is a title change. i was a consultant before traveling to various cities, but that was only traveling at the beginning and the end of the week with all expenses paid.

i really would like to accept as i want a change in industry, which will open doors to other opportunities outside of healthcare. but i also don’t know how long i’ll last if i have to travel everday. the team and upper management really liked me, but can’t negotiate a higher salary or other benefits due to budget constraints. if i decline, they’ll go with a back up candidate.

what are your thoughts and suggestions? if you need any additional details, let me know.

admin answers:

For me 5 hours commuting is way too much time and (for me) it would be exhausting. You may regret missing that time with your daughter. You have done the right thing by thinking this out, but of course the ultimate decision is yours.

Best wishes and good luck!

Daniel asks…

Has anyone done this? Is this a scam?

A company by the name of JPL Independent & Co LTD contacted me via e-mail if I was interested in a job with them. The job would allow me to work from home. By going over their web site http://jplindependent.org/index.php it seemed good to me so I agreed. They don’t ask for money what so ever only for my contact information and Bank account number to which they will deposit my paycheck too. So I e-mailed them back the completed application and my resume. They emailed me back to day telling me my training start tomorrow and via internet so one will be contacting me as well. If I have any questions to call this number (781) 241 9930. Well, I called and its not a working # and 781 area code appears to be located in Lexington, MA, when the website indicates the company is located in Buxton, Derbyshire overseas. Now am scared because they have my personal information and account # (not my SS# though). What can I do? Or What should I do? i dont want to know about any other work from home site, only if this is a scam!

Also they e-mailed me these instructions:

Jane asks…

Why the HELL havn’t I been FIRED!!?

WTF …WHY won’t they FIRE ME already?
So for the past six months I have been working in sales at a kids radio station. The product is total BS and doesn’t work. The station manager had to lie to me to get me to come work there telling me that I would be given active accounts when all they want me to do is cold call from the yellow pages. The funny thing is, they pay me a guaranteed base salary of 35K. I have no set schedule, I show up when I want, leave when I want. I have the option to “work from home“. I haven’t really sold much since I’ve been there partly because the product is crap, partly because I refuse to be a telemarketer, and partly because of the economy. The funny thing is, they keep threatening to fire us salespeople but only give warnings and never follow through with it. I mean they’ve paid me all this money and I literally do NOTHING..I show my face in the office for a couple hours every day…get bitched at for not selling…have performance reviews where I just say “I’m trying” and nod my head. a month ago they put me on “probation” during which time they wanted me to produce about 20k in cold calling sales “or else” I sold zero…..I thought today would have been it…and it wasn’t…NOTHING HAPPENED? They asked if I wanted to leave, and I said “No” LOL. I can’t afford to just walk out. Why don’t they just let me go…this is a joke! Any thoughts? It’s not that I am lazy, its just that I am angry that I was decieved into taking the job. There’s something weird with the whole situation.

admin answers:

Why the HELL havn’t I been FIRED!!?
Good question…………your as* should be gone, they definitely have “cause” SO
someone must like you and think you are doing something right.
They obviously feel you have potential and realize times are tough.
Perhaps they are counting on the economy turning around and then you will become productive. From what you state here you are not worthy of that belief and will never be willing to put forth the effort to be successful.

admin answers:

I found a few different ways to make money at home from the Internet. I didn’t spend a cent to start or join (1) I have a website that makes me money (2) I also sell stuff on the Internet, basically I sold extra items that I had at home or I go to yard sales, discount bins at my local stores and resell them on the net (3) I also make a little extra money by reading emails, I spend about 1/2 to an hour a night doing this, I got lucky a few weeks ago and came across a website that had all the info that I needed about reading emails. I will post the link that I used below. If you need more info, feel free to email me through Yahoo Answers

Steve asks…

r those “work from your home and earn $$$$” real jobs?

admin answers:

The ones that aren’t scams actually require work on your part – and if you’re in need of money soon then you’re likely to be sorely disappointed in any of those as well. Most of the legit opportunities out there take time to build – so if someone makes an outrageous claim of income it probably isn’t true ( and those that are true sure didn’t make that kind of money when they first began ).

Time & effort required – but do your own research on what is best for you, don’t take the advice of myself and others as gospel from this type of public forum.

I have other ideas that may help – one of them is an online opportunity but another is one that will require a little effort to market yourself – try some data entry for local businesses, many of them don’t have the time to do it in-house and will gladly pay someone else to do it. Professionals are a good place to start, lawyers, doctors, chiropractors, etc – they need their “in-house” folks doing other things rather than busy work.

Hope it helps!

Caroline asks…

Did any vocational professionals help you obtain a work-from-home job, due to your disability?

I have a severe disability, & almost every work-at-home job is a scam. But I hear how people with disabilities work from home through legitimate companies.

admin answers:

I went thru Voc Rehab twice and also phoned them twice at different times, and each time they said to me that they do “not” have any jobs wherein you can work from home or from the net.

Not all work-at-home jobs are a scam. If they were all a scam then people wouldn’t be making money doing them.

Sure there are some that are scams (and that makes it look bad for the rest of the employers out there). I have on a few different dates on the blogs on my 360 page a list of places you can check out if you like. I haven’t gone thru them so I don’t know which are scams so venture at your own choice. If you find some that shouldn’t be in the list let me know.

Mandy asks…

Does anyone know of legitimate work from home on your computer jobs sites?I would like to earn some extra?

income.Thanks

admin answers:

I’m not quite sure what angle your looking for from working from your home. Are you looking for a job involving a computer or working from your home? If you’d like some websites to take a look at to work from home, email me and I’d be happy to pass them on your way. If your looking for computerized jobs from home, I can check around for you.
Good luck!

I read tons views on home based business, and I’d have to disagree on a few things. I know quite a few home based business’s that are extremely good to get involved in. Products, reps and everything else. I know lot’s of different people that make an incredible amount of money (I’ve seen their paychecks, their efforts and some I’ve gotten involved in too, and now my husband and I are both stay at home parents because we took a chance at a home based business. Boy am I glad we did. You do have to be careful of scams out their however. But I have a few that I suggest you take a look at.
There are some computerized ones, however, they will take awhile to generate money.
If your interested in these websites, email me and I’ll be happy to pass them your way!
Best of luck!

Don asks…

where can you find good work from home jobs?

Not the ones that ask you to buy a bunch of there crap and send it out to people asking them to send money for something. Real jobs that can be done from your own home. please only answer if it is a legit company.

admin answers:

It would really be good if you are into services. I for one work from cause I’m fed up kissing my boss’ hiny. I was a creative director for an agency in the Philippines so I work from as a consultant and a graphic artist. Find something that really interest you and not because everybody is doing it. Some tips: 1)business cards, leaflets, flyers anything that would say “Hey i’m actually doing business!”,2)Go out. Just because you work from does not mean you get cooped inside. Besides, it will be additional contacts for prospective clients.

Graham asks…

Does anyone know of any legit work from home chat jobs? Thanks for your help!?

Jobs with no fees or cost of any kind.

admin answers:

You could become an hosting advisor, but you would need to learn alot about server maintainance.

Wayne asks…

Are those internet work from home jobs a con or can you really earn money by sitting on your butt?

For instance look at this one that I found on www.nethomeworkers.co.uk I think that its a con but I’m not sure. It doesn’t even tell you what the ‘orders’ are that you’ll be filling!

admin answers:

Most of them are a scam. I mean really, did Bill Gates and Steve Jobs get rich sitting on their butts? And if those jobs are legit, why doesn’t anyone know a real person that is a success in those career fields?

Richard asks…

Who can help with home loan modifications?

I have been trying to work with my bank on modifying my mortgage since July of last year and I’m still in the same place. I am with Coldwell banker and I cant seem to get any answers from anyone, just the run around and that’s “its in review” (for a whole year). I have lost about 70K in my homes value during the recession and still have an 8% interest rate. I have made my payments on time for the past 3 years but since I have lost my job my income has gone down. I dont want to lose the house. Can anyone give me alternatives of who I can contact such as lawyers to help get my mortgage payments down by modifying my loan??? I have already been scouted out by scams, any legal info would help!!
Thanks for all info!!

admin answers:

Your lender is the only entity that can grant a modification. If you can still afford the payments…they will NOT grant a modification.

Steve asks…

Would you call these scams?

I know some things are scams but I am not always good at knowing for sure after all no one knows everything. Would all of you call these scams or not?

SCAMS

One – that is a typical money mule scam that will land you in prison. You will not be paid $2300/month. You are being used to launder counterfeit checks and criminal money and will eventually be arrested for bank fraud, forgery, etc. Legitimate companies NEVER ask random people over the internet to use a personal bank account or handle payments or any other transactions. How do they know you are not a convicted felon? If you haven’t been to the office for an interview, if you haven’t been fingerprinted and bonded, there is no job. And by law all financial transactions have to go through a merchant banking account. By using your personal account to handle business transactions, in addition to bank fraud you are also committing tax evasion
Besides, Arphis Group has already been exposed as a scam
http://www.delphifaq.com/faq/scams/f1057.shtml?p=67 then scroll to the post dated 2010-12-21, 05:29:08

Two – has also been reported as a scam

craigslist just full of scammers and a waste of time?

This has been my fun for the past few days…After reviewing some of the posts on yahoo answers is craigslist just a waste of time? Should I go through ebay like I have always? This person wanted to pay more than what I was asking for and told me he was not scamming me all in one sentence. LOL He must have been in denial… The actual conversation begins at the bottom of the post.

sorry i have been scam that way before i made a payment and the money was deliver to his account and i didn’t receive any item so i can’t accept that kind of business once i made the payment through PayPal u first deliver the tracking number to PayPal and your account will be credited
thanks

Thank you again for your inquiry…there are a couple of things that will need to happen in order for me to ship the product.

1. I will need an address to determine the cost of shipping and any customs regulations for shipping to West Africa (I need this before I will send any information through paypal)
2. The money must be deposited into my bank account (for asset protection) before I will ship the product and provide you with a tracking number.

Unfortunatly these criterias must be met first before the items will ship. Just like you I do not scam and I have sold many things on ebay before this is my first time through craigslist though. If you wish to not follow these steps then I thank you for your inquiry and hope you have a wonderful day.

Thank you,

Jeff

admin answers:

Yes, this is a scam. Accept payment first only. And no money orders or drafts. They try to send you too much money to hurry the sale and then the check is a fake.
~
But there are scammers on eBay and Craigslist alike. Both use the same tactic. EBay is better at helping you if you use PayPal. Never ship without payment.

admin answers:

The good news is , there is a company called mastercopy (or master copy).
and also a mastercopy.com – but that is not in use

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/mastercopy.com

Now, the fact you are ‘accepted’ without you having seen one another face to face is a red flag.
Also, the ‘sending of money’ part sounds fishy. Usually this is a fake check scam – where they ask you to cash in, and send a portion of the amount to someone else using Western Union or MoneyGram (these do not offer recovery or tracking services – thus are used by conmen)

I would contact your local police with this info, perhaps they can assist you in A) making sure you do not get arrested for using forged checks, and b) arresting the person trying to scam you.
